The Ayer ConsCom met on Thursday evening, May 26th, to review/discuss the bids they had received for two RFP’s that they had issued for weed treatment this spring. FOFP had some presence in the room with about a dozen faithful attendees there to offer encouragement to our officials to take the next step towards a better Flannagan Pond.
The first RFP was for Flannagan Pond, and that was awarded to Lycott Environmental, Inc. of Southbridge, Massachusetts. Their bid came in at $28,200. This is being funded by the UDAG funds offered for the project by the Board of Selectmen on April 19, 2011.
The second RFP, was for spot treatment of Sandy Pond and Pine Meadow (aka Erskine Pond). This was awarded to Aquatic Control Technology (ACT) of Sutton, MA. Their bid was about $7,800. I’ll edit this post with more specific info when I have it at my disposal. These funds were left over from prior years appropriations for weed treatment. The money left in that account was about $8,600. This balance was adequate for spot treatments, but certainly not for anything on the scale of Flannagan Pond.
Please note, though the contracts have been awarded, this is not a “done deal”. We are still at the mercy of the weather and any bureaucratic obstacles that may arise. Remain Vigilant!
As I wrap up this post, I do wish to give credit where it is due. Selectmen Gary Luca and Pauline Conley have championed our efforts throughout this process. Town Admin Robert Pontbriand has earned my respect as a capable and trustworthy administrator. I sincerely hope the Conservation Commission is aware that there is a tremendous opportunity to gain an ally in their efforts to fund a comprehensive pond management program in the Town of Ayer. Thank you all for your efforts thus far, let’s keep this moving forward.
